WRITE TEAM: Write down your goals - MyWebTimes.com

As I write this Christmas is still ahead of us but by the time you read these words it will have just passed. The gifts will all be opened, wrapping paper trashed and the annual returns and exchanges will be well underway.

My hope is that your family gathering and gift-giving was everything you dreamed it would be. Many of my loved ones have birthdays around the holiday so it is an extra challenge to be sure they are celebrated, too.

One of our family traditions is to light the candles on a cake and sing "Happy Birthday" to Jesus. We gather around the table, turn off the lights, read the story of the birth of Christ from Luke Chapter 2 and then sing a few Christmas carols.

We have four generations of family gathered together so we have to stand and cram into the dining room to make sure everyone can see the cake with the precious little crèche that sits on top. It’s a beautiful tradition that all happens before any presents are exchanged. It’s calm, quiet, and peaceful so we can reflect on why we gathered in the first place.

I’m sure you have some beautiful traditions in your family, too. Another one of mine is to start looking forward to the new year. I’m not a believer in New Year’s resolutions, but I am a goal setter.

Resolutions come and go. Most of the time unfulfilled. As a personal trainer for over 10 years I have seen the mad rush at he gym at the beginning of the year. It is usually so crazy crowded for a week or so but by the end of January only the regulars and the seriously committed are still showing up.

Even daydreamers like me need to set goals or I never actually move the ball forward. You might be wondering; “What’s the difference between a daydream and a goal?”

The answer is time and commitment!

A goal is a daydream that is written down with a date attached to it.

A good example is the Write Team. I have a date that each article or column is due. Without that date or deadline or time limit I wasn’t getting published. It was just a daydream because I kept it to myself. Once I said yes, I was now committed to a specific task, on a specific date in time. As you can see, it’s working!

As a client I hold myself accountable to the goals I commit to with my coach. The goals are mine but there is real power in speaking them out loud to my coach and hearing myself saying it. It’s even more powerful to write them down, give them a time to be completed, and take action steps to move forward.

Studies show that people who write their goals down are much more likely to complete them. There is some kind of magic that happens in the brain when I put a real pen, with real ink, on real paper and begin to write. The magic of memory happens. It’s not just me; we’re all wired that way!

What goals are you going to set for 2020? What will your life look like next Christmas?
