The other day, a letter expressed an opinion that the E-R promotes a political bias in its publication. The letter particularly referenced the number of letters printed reflecting left-wing, Trump hating viewpoints. I disagree.
The editor, to my recollection, has stated that almost all letters submitted are published and generally in the order in which they are received. Letters which are not published are withheld from publication primarily on the basis of decorum. At least, that is my understanding. From time to time, editorial privilege might be exercised in the form of deleting an adjective or noun which some readers might find excessively offensive. (I know from personal experience!)
I have a couple of suggestions for the complainant and others who are tired of reading the same, tiresome rants from the same left-wing letter writers. Do as I have on occasion: write a letter responding. I am quite sure those responses will be printed. Also, flood the editor with opinions not involving politics. For instance, why you find water coloring preferable to painting in acrylics. Sports is a fertile subject matter. For example, the Houston Astros stealing signs or Colin Kaepernick fumbling away his recent NFL workout.
I suggest that the complainant consider more than letters published. Consider the E-R’s own editorials and the syndicated columnists. Personally, I fail to identify any political bias in the paper’s editorials; the columnists evenly represent the political landscape.
